Next month’s Irish Open will have a reduced prize fund after main sponsor 3 pulled out, it has been announced.
The financial backing from the event comes from the European Tour and Failte Ireland, but without the main sponsor the prizes will be significantly lower than last year.
The three day tournament to be held at Killarney at the end of July will see US Open winner Rory McIlroy playing his first competition since becoming the youngest winner of the Open in over 70 years.
Last year’s winner, Ross Fisher, was awarded around £450,000 in prize money but it is thought the prize will be halved this year.
3 sponsored the event in 2009 and 2010 but decided not to renew this for 2011, instead choosing to put money in the Republic of Ireland’s football team.
"There is a lot of sponsor interest but not in time to make it work this year." said European Tour chief executive George O'Grady.
"We're looking for a long-term sponsor and think we will get it."
